David Lee Nall was living the American dream: he had
a new house, four cars, and a
business that was grossing seven figures. He had
come a long way for a skinny, dyslexic kid who had
been a poor student. But in the midst of all this
hard-earned success, his weight had climbed to 245
pounds, his energy levels were flagging, and he had
discovered some tumors on his stomach and lower
back. Although the tumors were diagnosed as benign,
the health scare was a wake-up call. David wasn’t
even 30 years old, but all the long hours at the
office and the constant stress were starting to take
a toll. His son, was only four. David
wanted to be around to see him grow up.
On December 1, 2004, David decided to
change his life once and for all. He made the
decision to start taking care of himself. He bought
healthy foods, watched what he ate, and restructured
his exercise routine. Within six months, he had
lost 49 pounds. He resolved to enter the 2006 Texas
Shredder Classic, a natural, drug-tested, body
building contest.
David began eating small, frequent meals
totaling 350 grams of protein, 300 grams of
carbohydrates and 40 grams of fat daily. Five days
a week he did 30 minutes of high intensity cardio
workouts and weight training, with 45 minutes of
cardio on the weekends. After losing a total of 59
pounds and dropping his waist size from 42 inches to
32 inches, he placed second in his class at the
contest.
But the real
reward was how he felt: he hadn’t felt this good
since he was in high school, when he’d first started
weight lifting and strength training as a way to
overcome the weak knees that prevented him from
playing sports. His dedication led him to win third
place in the 1994 Iron Man Natural Body Building
Contest, third place in the 1995 Missouri State Body
Building Show, and first place in the heavy weight
division and overall competition at the 1995 St.
Louis Body Building Show. Indeed, his passion for
fitness even led to his first job at 18, when he
began working at Bally Total Fitness as a porter for
$4.25 per hour. By the age of 19, he was a service
manager and was exceeding all quotas. His success
led to increasing responsibilities at various
prominent gyms, including Gold’s Gym and Q the
Sports Club.
Further success led him to open his own
business, Bonus Building Care, a commercial cleaning
franchise, in Austin, Texas. His hard work led to
numerous awards, including the Franchisee of the
Year Award. However, he never forgot the
gratification he felt in working with clients at the
health clubs. Today, he still manages his
franchise, but also has his own personal trainer
business. In addition to being a certified personal
trainer, he is a certified sports nutritionist and
aerobics instructor.
David enjoys seeing people undergo the same kind of
transformation he went through. No one is ever too
old to adopt a healthy lifestyle; the body has an
amazing ability to heal and renew itself. He takes
pride in tailoring an exercise and diet program to
the particular needs and abilities of his clients.
People get so wrapped up in their daily
responsibilities that they forget to ask what they
have done for themselves lately, he observes.
“Taking care of yourself,” he says, “is the best way
to take care of others.”
